music

Southside Baptist Church has a rich and traditional musical heritage. That heritage is continued to this day with its Sanctuary Choir, the 62-rank Holtkamp pipe organ, Martinson Choral Scholars, and a wide variety of world-class vocal soloists and guest instrumentalists from local universities and the Alabama Symphony.

Sanctuary Choir

The Sanctuary Choir sings at the 11 a.m. worship service each Sunday. Members practice Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. in the Martinson Choir Rehearsal Room on the third floor of the Education Building.

Martinson Choral Scholars

Scholars are students from local universities majoring in vocal performance or vocal/choral music education who sing in the Sanctuary Choir and offer solos during worship. These talented students receive a scholarship from the church.

Participation in the Southside Music Ministry

The gift of music to God’s people is open to anyone at Southside Baptist Church. In the teaching tradition of Jesus, we provide learning opportunities for the seasoned musical veteran and the beginning musician – at any age. Learning, rehearsing, singing and creating music are all behaviors that anyone can observe and learn. The only requisites for participation are a desire to learn (to start at a beginning, to be a vulnerable learner in a safe and nurturing environment) and persistence.

Organ

Our pipe organ, composed of 3,354 pipes, has been in service for 40 years. The pipes are placed in 62 ranks controlled by three manual keyboards and a pedal board, and are set in a moveable console.
