As the six o’clock hour approaches every Tuesday morning, a line begins forming down the sidewalk in front of Southside Baptist Church. Residents of Five Point and surrounding communities gather to hear a devotional reading, to share in a moment of prayer and to receive a box of USDA food for the week. Operated by Southside’s own Brent Thompson and a host of volunteers from a variety of Birmingham churches, the Southside Food Bank serves up to one hundred individuals on a weekly basis. “This is the church’s mission,” noted volunteer Donna Burgess, “and we find our meaning and purpose as Christians when we engage in mission.” In conjunction with the United Way, Southside Baptist Church sponsors a Food Bank that serves the residents of the 35205 neighborhoods of Birmingham, Alabama. For more information, contact the United Way at 205-251-5131. *On the third Tuesday of each month, health screenings and pastoral counseling are available.
